man has been killed by a piece of falling masonry as he sat outside a bar in south London.

The 27-year-old man died in Battersea Rise, Battersea, at about 21:20 BST on Wednesday, police said, adding it was not connected to the recent disorder.

Eyewitnesses said the man was killed as an awning apparently collapsed at Le Bouchon Bordelais, a French restaurant and bar. He died at the scene.

Police said the man's next-of-kin are yet to be informed.

Lindsay George, 21, who works at the nearby Entree Restaurant and Bar, said: "The restaurant has been cordoned off and half the awning has fallen down outside.

"There are a number of police officers around the restaurant."

Shops and restaurants on Battersea Rise were not affected by the London riots, she said.

A Met Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that the police were called at 9.20pm yesterday to Battersea Rise after a piece of masonry fell on a man."
