However on the U.S. Geological Survey web site, the March 11 earthquake remains an 8.9 magnitude quake.

The Japanese agency said it upgraded the magnitude because of its analysis of the earthquake. A spokesman said very different and unusual wave types were found and that it was very rare type of earthquake.

The Japanese meteorological agency estimated Sunday that there will be a 70 percent chance to get M7 or over aftershocks within 3 days.
