City quake death toll climbs to 92: "New Zealand's prime minister said the death toll from the earthquake that devastated the city of Christchurch has risen to 92.
Prime minister John Key told TV One that there are grave fears over an additional 200 people missing.
However, police in Christchurch later said the death toll has risen to 98, with 226 people missing. The earthquake struck just after lunch time on Tuesday local time.
Rescue teams were clinging to the hope of still finding survivors, despite fears that up to 120 bodies are entombed under one of the buildings hardest hit by the shock.
An Irishman, psychiatric nurse Eoin McKenna, is among the victims of the quake, and a man believed to a Briton has also been killed.
Police Supt Dave Cliff said 'between the late 60s and 120 bodies, at the upper limit' were believed to still be inside the Canterbury Television building, which also housed an English language school."
